The word “devil” is a translation of the Greek word diabolos which means “one who separates” or “seducer”. He not only separated himself from God, but EVERYTHING he does is to keep you separated from God as well. He will use any means necessary to fulfill his work. As the apostle Paul said in Ephesians 6, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Do not take Paul’s warning here lightly. While we can easily over-spiritualize everything, where the devil is under every rock and behind every tree, I just don’t think that’s our problem here in the west. Quite the opposite, we say we believe in Jesus Christ as God and yet, we practically deny the existence of the devil and his angels in this world.
Do not forget that he is actively at work to KEEP YOU SINNING. Do not fear him, but do not underestimate him. It is a fatal mistake to find him all powerful. It is also a fatal mistake to find him nowhere. Instead, we need to see what God has to say about him and how he can be defeated. And so today, we will look at four aspects of the devil, his sin (v. 8), his works (v. 8), his children (v. 10), and his destruction (v. 9).
