In John’s letter, this section just seems out of place. It comes in the middle of some pretty strong words by John.
But we cannot move away from the fact that at the core of John’s heart is the heart of a pastor. What he wants us to know without a shadow of a doubt, just like any loving parent, is that all of these warnings are not his way of showing his disappointment in the church. He doesn’t write what he has written because he does NOT care for them. On the contrary, because he loves them so much and has a heart for them and wants with all of his heart that not one person would be left out of the Kingdom of heaven, he gives these warnings.
Verses 12-14 is the reminder then, in the middle of it all that he loves them and God loves them so deeply and he never wants them to forget.

World Loving God

Sunday Dec 08, 2019
This is one of those passages of the Bible that is so often misunderstood. It’s what gives Christianity the reputation as the “Don’t Do” religion. Or it turns Christianity into a religion of communes and monks, where to follow Jesus means to run away from the evil, polluting world. But is this what John is saying in this passage? We will look carefully at this text and examine first, what world loving is not, second, what world lusting is, and third who is this world loving God that we await this advent season.

These verses in John set the stage for some of the most reassuring passages of Scripture. When we are God’s children, we bear two distinct “birthmarks,” if you will, that remind us that we are His children. The first is righteousness (2:29) and the second is love (3:1).
