Nehemiah 8 is all about the Bible. It really is the book of life not only eternally, but for the here and now. We will look at three verbs that help us to understand the significance of God’s Word from Nehemiah 8: 1) Read (v. 1-8), 2) Repent (v. 9), 3) Rejoice (v. 10-18).

Our society is a society of burdens and loneliness, perhaps more than ever before in the history of the world. Despite having more access than ever to one another through the Internet, we have more loneliness than ever. This week’s text in Nehemiah 9-10, we see Israel experiencing a joy in light burdens that has an answer for us today in our own search for such joy in light burdens. We are told how this is, in chapters 9-10, by 1) Remembering that God never made burdens heavy (9:1-15), 2) Realizing that WE make burdens heavy ourselves (9:16-30), and 3) Responding with the joy of light burdens (9:32-10:39)

The Death of Death

Anyone who has lost loved ones knows the myriad of emotions that follow. There is shock over loss. Intense sorrows and grieving. There is also the buckling down to get tasks done such as funeral arrangements, receiving guests, taking condolence texts and phone calls. But then there is laughter over fond memories. There can be a strange lightness. There might even be guilt of decreased burdens, especially after caring for a long-term ill person.
There is no template in how we should respond to death because death is horrific. It is always tragic. It is strangely abnormal, no matter how much our world tries to normalize it. And this is why this day is such a day of hope and celebration, unlike any other day. It is the day where Death died and we celebrate death's demise. This is Paul’s essential message for us today in 1 Cor 15:54-57. The death of death.

Buildings: A Significant Means, Never the End

Following the burning down of Notre Dame, billionaires responded with an outpouring of donations. Why? Not because it represented a place where God is to be worshipped, but rather, it represents France and the ideals of the West. Contrast that to the churches burned down in Sri Lanka. Hundreds of Christians are murdered, but very few care about the murders, let alone the church buildings destroyed.
Which buildings do you think people care about more? It’s obvious. Which buildings matter to God more? As we prepare to build our new church building, we need a Godward perspective on such a project. We must remember that church buildings are a means, but never the end. And what does it take to MAKE SURE the building does NOT become the end. This chapter shows us. It takes Diversity (11:1-12:26) and it takes Dedication (12:27-47).
